CP-THT complements of verbs

An incomplete list of a few verbs that frequently take CP-THT complement: segja

CP-THT complements of nouns and pronouns

For cases like ÞVÍ, ÞVÍ AÐ, AF ÞVÍ AÐ, see CP-THT preceded by a PP.

CP-THT preceded by a PP

For cases where a CP-THT is preceded by a PP with a pronominal object, and the pronominal object is interpreted as the CP-THT (the pronoun is just a placeholder for the that-clause), the expression is parsed with the CP-THT-PRN as the complement of the pronoun, as in the example below (following the PPCME2,PPCEME guidelines for "because" when written as two separate words, "be cause". Icelandic expressions that mean 'because' and should be parsed this way include af því að, fyrir því, með því, vegna þess.

	  (PP (P fyrir-fyrir)
	      (NP (PRO-D því-það)
		  (CP-THT-PRN (C að-að)
			      (IP-SUB (NP-PRD (OTHER-N annað-annar))
				      (BEPI er-vera)
				      (NP-SBJ (NS-N efni-efni)
					      (NP-POS (N-G bæklings-bæklingur) (D-G þessa-þessi)))))))
	  (. .-.))
  (ID PILTUR,.14))

Insert an empty C head when the word því means 'because' and it is the complement of a P:

	  (PP (P með-með)
	      (NP (PRO-D því-það)
		  (CP-THT-PRN (C 0)
			      (IP-SUB (NP-SBJ (NS-N bændurnir-bóndi))
				      (BEDI voru-vera)
				      (ADVP (ADV heldur-heldur))
				      (NP-PRD (Q-N engir-enginn) (NS-N vinir-vinur))))))
	  (. ;-;))
  (ID PILTUR,.35))

Note that the CP-THT clause *immediately* follows the pronoun in this case.

If the pronoun and CP-THT were separated by some other constituent, then the CP-THT would be treated as an extraposed that clause: The object pronoun's NP is labeled e.g. "=1" with the index corresponding to the CP-THT-PRN, e.g. "CP-THT-PRN-1", in accordance with the guidelines for extraposed that-clauses in the PPCME2, PPCEME.

When the preposition is not present, as in því að instead of af því að, insert silent preposition.

(PP (P 0)
    (NP (PRO-D því-það)
	(CP-THT (C að-að)
	        (IP-SUB (NP-SBJ (OTHER-N annað-annar))
		        (BEPI er-vera)
			(NP-OB1 (N-N efni-efni)
			        (NP-POS (N-G bæklings-bæklingur) (D-G þessa-þessi)))))))

When there is no preposition and not CP-THT following ÞVÍ, but ÞVÍ still means 'because', insert silent preposition as before - but without CP-THT.

TIL ÞESS AÐ

The same conventions are followed for TIL ÞESS AÐ, where the complement of the pronoun ÞESS is an IP-INF-PRP instead of a CP-THT (in the case where the pronoun and following clause are adjacent):

                  (PP (P til-til)
		      (NP (PRO-G þess-það)
			  (IP-INF-PRP (TO að-að)
				      (VB sýna-sýna)
				      (NP-OB2 (PRO-D henni-hún))
                                       ...
